Side Stories
This is a post for dumping extra stories I've written about Joshua's time in Route.
July 16, immediately prior to his post
Joshua sighed and glanced back at the city behind him. He’d wanted to stay longer, in this place which was as close to Shibuya as he’d found so far. But his role was set here, and if nothing else, he wanted to keep searching for the way home. He wasn’t going to give up on finding another way of contacting Hanekoma, and once he’d managed that, everything should go smoothly. Hopefully. He looked down at his hand, at the strong orange marks standing in stark relief against his skin, and felt the small thrill as a spark of electricity effortlessly jumped between his fingers.
This power was as close a feeling to home as he’d had since he’d gotten here.
“Alright, Absol, we’re heading out again.”
He tossed the Pokeball to the ground, soon followed by two more. Having Espeon and Luxio out had become so natural that living in a city where there wasn’t enough space for them to stay out felt… odd. Upon appearing, Luxio immediately gave a small bark and bounded towards Joshua’s legs, tail wagging in excitement.
He paid her no mind.
Standing where he had appeared, Espeon was hunched down, growling, an aggressive posture. Joshua tilted his head and tried to reach out with his mind, but Espeon had completely closed himself off. He took out his Pokeball, but the moment the red light shot out, Espeon leapt to the side to avoid it. Josh slowly looked to Absol, who had also not moved from where he’d appeared. He was quiet and still, back to Joshua, head slightly raised. It didn’t take Joshua more than a second to realize what was happening. Absol: those who sensed disaster.
“What is it?”
It took Absol several seconds to respond. “There is a calamity befalling this world. And you are a part of it.”
He looked over his shoulder, and the look in his eyes seemed cold and distant. Joshua’s expression fell to one more neutral. At his feet, Luxio made a small, confused whine.
“I am not ungrateful for the time we’ve spent together. But for the sake of this world, I cannot let you continue like this. I have no ill feelings.” And with that, Absol, too, slammed the door shut on his mind.
Joshua gave a small, wistful smile. He grabbed another Pokeball from his belt, and tossed it to the side. From it appeared a Gardevoir, and she instantly tilted her head in confusion. Joshua reached into his pocket and handed her his PokeGear. It wouldn’t do to have him damage it when it was going to be so hard to replace. “Here. Just hold this for me, alright?” She hesitated, but then reached out and took the device anyway.
Joshua turned back to Absol. This… this was almost painfully nostalgic. So much so he couldn’t help but smile.
“I understand. But I cannot allow myself to fall here, either. No ill feelings.” Maybe he was a calamity to this world. But this wasn’t his own world.
His fists tightened at his sides, and though the type was different, the swirl of power around him was a relief and familiar. Electricity crackled loud in his ears, though it was effortless to tune out. He felt his feet leaving the ground, and sparks gathered on his shoulder blades. His expression became more serious.
“Let’s get this over with.”
