[ The video clicks on to a view of the ceiling in one of the rooms of the Blackthorn Inn. The fan is slowly circling, and the only other thing visible in the frame is an arm reaching straight up from slightly off screen, holding up a Rising Badge. ]

We've already figured out that collecting a whole set of badges doesn't actually get you anything of value, right? Or did that finally change while I wasn't looking?

[ Joshua sighs, and the arm lowers out of the feed. There's the sound of it hitting the bed, and the camera shakes just the slightest. ]

You'd think that after I spent this long collecting them, I'd feel prouder at finally winning the last one. Mmm, perhaps this isn't really for me after all.

[ After a pause, he giggles. Then he rolls over and leans over the Gear, his face finally entering the camera's view. ]

How about this? Tell me about the worst thing that happened to you at home that you're still willing to talk about. Even if it doesn't seem to compare to what others have been through. Tragedy is quite relative, after all.

I can see that. Though if I'm planning on settling down, that's sort of a moot point. Traveling was never really my style, anyway.

That's a shame. It's so rare to have the opportunity to explore a world with minimal danger.

A world where you cannot take three steps outside a town's walls without meeting monsters.

How does an economy even function under those conditions?

[ At least around here you just have to avoid the tall grass... ]

With well-armed guards and ships, of course. Besides, the monsters that live close to towns are usually weak and relatively harmless.

Can you farm? Ah, but I suppose if the monsters are edible, you have a plentiful supply of meat...

Of course we can; it merely takes some careful planning. The meat from hunted monsters does help, as long as you remember which species are poisonous.

I don't suppose they have a helpful "Poison" label in your handy electronic encyclopedia, do they? Hee hee...

Perhaps they would, if we had handy electronic encyclopedias in the first place.

Ah, yes. How fares technology? My world is a good deal more advanced than here, but we didn't exactly have roving monsters to deal with.

We have the monsters, but not the electricity. It's a poor trade.

I'd take the electricity any day, myself. Not to mention cellphones.

I take it you all are master wall builders, though. Hee hee.

I'd not call us masters. We merely use strong stone, rather than whatever the locals use for theirs.

I can certainly imagine. Is it always so exciting back in your world, or was the meteor a special occasion?

My world has plenty of excitement, but otherworldly creatures trying to destroy it still count as special occasions, thankfully.

In that case, I have to ask: what passes for "normal" excitement?

Regular monsters, visits to other towns, friends trying spells of their own creation on unwitting passersby...

... On second thought, I suppose that's not surprising, considering the rest.

It's relatively common. I have little talent for it, but that still suffices.
