[ Greetings, Route! Today Joshua is broadcasting from a seat in the Viridian City Pokemon Center, as an Absol nurses a good deal of singed fur on the bench next to him. That Jolteon was a nasty final surprise okay. ]

Are all of the challenge teams actually well-rounded, or did Blue just want to be some special exception? I do suppose the joke may be on me for expecting the Earth Badge to be something like ground type.

As far as I recall, they usually have a theme, but there are some exceptions. The badges don't necessarily reflect their fighting style.

Fair enough. Any tips on the exceptions? [ Before he walks into another match he's not actually prepared for and wins by the skin of his teeth again at best. ]

Not much, I figure always having a normal type as your first pokemon on the field would be the best plan. One with an attack that can harm ghost types and rock types, since otherwise it's the most stable type.

... And when lacking possession of a normal type Pokemon?

That's classified, hee hee. You don't have a more general suggestion beyond that?

You could do what you did right now before a match. I'm assuming, given some of the people here have been around a while, at least one of them is bound to have challenged certain gym leaders at one point.

Ah, but if I ask before each and every match, I might as well just read that guide and be done with it. I'm quite satisfied making due with just an overview of the major surprises.

Do you ask for stats and the attacks used by the pokemon? You can always plan a counterattack if you know those.

Too detailed. [ He giggles. ] That takes the fun out of it. Simple things like "Oh, by the way, his last Pokemon isn't actually ground type at all" would suffice.

That could mean just about any type of pokemon would be available. It doesn't give you a better idea of who to bring along.

No, but it gives me a better idea of when to expect the surprises! Just enough to not be caught off guard while still having the fun of it.

I wasn't really planning on it, but they're a nice way to kill time while I'm traveling.

So does that mean they saved the best for first?

USUALLY THAT GYM WOULD BE THE VERY LAST, SINCE VICTORY ROAD AND THE ELITE FOUR ARE OFF OF A CONNECTING ROUTE.
THE REST OF THE GYMS STICK TO ONE MAIN TYPE, AS PER USUAL.
SOME OF THOSE DUAL TYPES ARE NASTY THOUGH.

[ Then why is it right next to where the ferry drops you off, sheesh ]

But at the least, they're dual type with one of those types being the gym's specialty?

YEAH, PRETTY MUCH.
I MEAN THEY'RE CHALLENGING, DON'T GET ME WRONG.
EVEN SO, I STILL DIDN'T HAVE MORE THAN TWO OR THREE OF MY TEAMMATES GET A KO.

[Perona really doesn't care much for the actual intended message here. Oh no, her thoughts and heart goes out for the lovely and adorable Absol that looks like it just went through hell and back. Oh, the poor thing! I-It's so pretty...and so fluffy and adorable! She wishes she could be there to wrap its wounds or just snuggle it.]

Aah, you poor thing! All that beautiful white fur...blackened so! [She turns her attention on the actual trainer now, brows knitting together.] Oi, you. Boy. Take better care of preventing harm unto your pokemon! Cute, beautiful creatures like that one shouldn't look so shabby! Make sure to treat its wounds properly, too! [Back to the Absol, and her tone and expression changes.] It doesn't still hurt, does it? Fluffy cutie...

[ excuse me did you just call his bff pokemon a "fluffy cutie" ]

... I think one's for you.

[ He points the gear at Absol, who lifts his head to stare at it for a few seconds, then focuses on Joshua behind it with a look of "why are you bothering me with that thing again". ]

[Yes, yes she did.

And aaah, Perona's so in love with the beautiful pokemon she sees up close now, eyes twinkling with adoration. It's so pretty! And those red eyes, those claws, that malevolent scythe~! It's wondrous! ♥ She simply has to get her hands on such a wickedly gorgeous looking creature!]

Oh, look at you! Such a lovely thing...but your glossy fur was singed so... I hope your careless trainer is taking care enough to make sure you'll look your best again! If anyone allows a cute, fluffy, and beautiful animal to suffer, then I won't forgive them!

In that case-- [ Joshua turns the camera back to himself. ] --I should introduce you to the Viridian City gym leader. His name is Blue, and he's the one who singed all that fur in the first place.

Viridian City? [She doesn't remember that city on her map...must be in that other region - camp toe or something like that.] Blue, was it? Mmh, simple enough to remember... And you said he was one of those gym leaders? If that's how this world's authoritative people treat the cute animals of this planet, than they're no better than the monsters they battle. Worse, even! At least these ones are cute.

...You're that one's trainer, are you? Make sure it recovers completely. Don't battle it before then.

Yes, yes. Beyond the gym leaders, I don't think anything in this area is going to give me any trouble anyway. I have faith in its strength.

Good. [If there's one thing Perona won't tolerate, it's a cute and beautiful animal that she likes being hurt or abused by someone (it's totally fine if it's her).]

...What exactly is it? A-And where did you happen to come upon it? I want one for myself.

It's an Absol. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this one was right there waiting for me when I first arrived here. I don't think I've seen one in the wild yet.

[Ugh, of course. Of course she wouldn't get a simple answer - Perona's luck has just been plain rotten lately. With a frown, and a heavy sigh, she mutters under her breath--]

How frustrating... Peh, I'll have to look for one myself then, like everything else that I like and want. You said it was called Ab...soul? [Does it steal souls? *A* Is that why is has a sickle on its head?? Oh, how wonderful. ♥]

Absol. [ Stealing souls is a different Pokemon, Perona. ] I'd offer to sell you one of its children, but it doesn't seem to be overly fond of any of the other Pokemon on my team.

Eh, no, I don't think I'd be able to afford it. And I really don't want another egg to sit and wait until I can hatch it... It's frustrating enough having to wait for the past one I had to hatch, and the one now, but I'll remember the offer, if it's still open...and if you can find anyone compatible for that lovely animal.

[She'd really prefer a purebreed, but whatever. Different parents meant a better chance of getting a really useful move, right? Thank goodness for that magazine she picked up in town, it had some brief but interesting things about breeding in it.]

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, an egg would probably hatch before you managed to come across one in the wild. Patience is a virtue, and all of that.

He would be the only one with a team quite like that, though it's rather simple to learn of that fact with a little research beforehand.

Research other than that walkthrough that occasionally goes out over the network? Because not all of us are the type to use that sort of thing.

There's always simply asking around, or seeing what others have said about their experiences, you know.
