[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

There seem to be some worlds that are relatively similar to each other and ones that are extremely far fetched, really. I actually have met someone here who was fictional in my world-very fictional, in fact. There is literally no way she could have been anything but fictional. Honestly, I thought the whole experience was incredibly stupid, but...

Well, I suppose that does answer that question. I wonder if it's possible to create a loop. If we could, that would narrow the possibilities for how this all works.

You might be in the middle of the ocean. Or a desert. ... Are there deserts here? I'm sure there's other environments inhospitable to most insects.

A loop? Do you mean as far as which worlds are present in works of fiction in which other worlds? That would be interesting to consider, actually. It's strange to see how much overlap is present even from the few examples I've experienced.

You can travel easily. Even the local volcano mountain, or the cold cold Ice Path wouldn't have much in the way for obtaining a bug. But, what can I actually say, people will usually pay for anything even if time isn't normally a particular significance in this world.

Exactly. If a loop is possible, it gives a clear direction for cause and effect. If there's a loop, worlds aren't created as pieces as fiction first. Rather, the world would have to exist and then be recreated in another.

Perhaps some people are just that lazy. Never underestimate the power of humans to be surprising, after all. For better or for worse.

Oh, they're surprising in some ways. [ The ways she states this easily comes off as condescending. They're surprisingly dumb to her, except it stopped being surprising decades ago. ]

I admit, while that is an interesting idea, I really doubt that worlds are created as fiction to begin with. The existence of infinite parallel worlds has been proven, so it stands to reason that at least one world would strongly resemble a given work of fiction.

Yes, but typically you wouldn't expect there to be enough works of fiction that any randomly selected parallel world would be represented. Thus we have a need for some stronger connection to exist in order for there to be any chance of such a phenomenon occurring.

I suppose that's true, but how would that connection even form? It's not like authors get visions of other worlds without any sort of explanation, after all.

Perhaps they do. Subconscious influence can be powerful. Maybe some people are simply more attuned to other worlds and can pick up on these things.

No. I wouldn't say poor. That implies they were trying. More like demonstrations that just proved how hopeless the human mind can be. [ Trying to still sound like a Disgruntled Person Who Never Got Over High School. ]
