[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

Oh, that too. But it takes all types. Surely there are some of them purchasing deliberately...

I can only wish. But I still don't see a point in that when, if you really wanted a caterpie, you could just walk outside and find one within two hundred steps.

You might be in the middle of the ocean. Or a desert. ... Are there deserts here? I'm sure there's other environments inhospitable to most insects.

You can travel easily. Even the local volcano mountain, or the cold cold Ice Path wouldn't have much in the way for obtaining a bug. But, what can I actually say, people will usually pay for anything even if time isn't normally a particular significance in this world.

Perhaps some people are just that lazy. Never underestimate the power of humans to be surprising, after all. For better or for worse.

Oh, they're surprising in some ways. [ The ways she states this easily comes off as condescending. They're surprisingly dumb to her, except it stopped being surprising decades ago. ]

You don't have much faith in humanity, do you?

I guess one can say I'm cynical. [ Did it take you this long to notice Joshua? She is not humanity's biggest fan. Or proponent. ]

Bad experiences?

No, no bad experiences in particular. [ What? She's not like some vampire who is the Last Of Her Kind. ] Just multiple demonstrations. [ She might as well come off as a disgruntled person who Never Got Over Highschool. ]

Poor demonstrations? Hee hee.

No. I wouldn't say poor. That implies they were trying. More like demonstrations that just proved how hopeless the human mind can be. [ Trying to still sound like a Disgruntled Person Who Never Got Over High School. ]

Hmm... like what?

Just general hopelessness. They try so hard to accomplish things, and proclaim how nice and above it all they are when they're impulsive, foolish monsters. It's been this way ever since I was a little teenaged girl. [ That teenaged girl technically never existed but still... ]

You don't see any beauty in that effort? Fighting nature and inevitability is how the world moves forward, after all.

The world moves forward through innovation. Fighting nature gets you nowhere, and, often times, no one is able to truly fight it. Analyzing it and making progress gets you to where you wish to be, but few people take that opportunity. The inevitable is solely the inevitable because people dont' have the means to fight it. The more you struggle and resist, the further you're sucked in. [ Oh boy, Joshua... Those were philosophical fighting words. ]

But isn't progress just the product of fighting against nature? You can be smart about it or you can be stupid about it, but in the end it's a form of resistance all the same. In order to do something new, you need to resist the urge to do what's always been done.

No. Progress is the product of idea. You may not like something, but, if it was nature that you were specifically up against, it wouldn't be successful. Perhaps they're attempting to fight how unhealthy a city is with a new vaccine, but that isn't fighting against nature. That's just trying to compensate for poor health standards.

I disagree with that. Nature isn't an absolute. Nature is an inclination. Just because things are inclined to go one way doesn't mean they can't be pushed in the other. Self-awareness can go a long way.

[licentious]

I never said nature was absolute. It can often be ambiguous and go into two directions, but, if it ever forms a solid leaning towards something, it's impossible to ultimately counter. For example, take flight, you cannot fly infinitely on your pokémon, as they become tired and return to the ground. Aircrafts and helicopters require fuel to propel themselves, otherwise they're pulled back down to earth and obviously people cannot fly period. Even though these all provide temporarily relief from gravity, they still ultimately have to adhere to it.

It's human nature to place one's own physical needs over those of others and one's own emotions. And yet some people consciously seek emotional fulfillment by ensuring others have their needs taken care of first.

[ Back home she was immortal!!!! She was special! And now everyone is immortal. And she's no longer special. And it hurts. ): ]

And just what would you consider those that try to fulfill other's needs before their own? [ The answer should be: foolish. ]

[ Oh... She really should have anticipated that. Her face kinda flattens in some bizarre muscle impulse to show annoyance. ]

I guess there's a generous word for everything.

And those words exist because perspective is a powerful thing. Two people can see the exact same situation two very different ways.
