[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

All I can say is that the forces that bring those eggs tend to give us pokemon based on receiver.

Appearances, personality traits, personal history, previous pets, and what not.

I think it has to do with whatever controls how this world works. When anyone shows up in this place they ended up with a pokémon. It's like the situation with the eggs.

The minute we get here, we've already been thoroughly looked over.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but the one I received had two types I didn't already have. Of course, that could just be coincidence.

Beyond that, I'm not entirely certain why this Pokemon in particular.

Yours doesn't have any previous association to you?

Not in the slightest. It's a Golett, which I have no relation with whatsoever. My world has nothing like it. Granted, I'd been considering getting one later on for type coverage, but it was only one of many I was thinking about.

There can't be any special reason why I'd receive one of these things for free, right? I guess it's all right, though, so it can stick around if it wants...

[ the Ditto clings happily to his leg now, chattering, and Shou sighs. ]

I have no idea what to name it, though.

They don't all need names. I don't name mine and they seem happy enough.

Occasionally this place gives everyone an egg, no strings attached. That's just how it is.

...Well, I think it's neat to give them names! Preferably cool ones, though as long as it fits them, I guess it wouldn't matter! But it sounds good if yours don't mind not having them, too.

[ looks a little irritated now hearing the last bit, though. ]

[ he looks down at his shiny Ditto, who stares back up happily. ]

I guess if this little guy is mine now, and he wants to travel with me, I can't exactly say "no", right? It's better to just move on forward with everything you've got!

[ when the Ditto chirps in response, Shou'll nod. ]

Yeah, that goes for you, too!

[ looking back at the screen, he'll grin at Joshua, too. ]

It seems like you're also getting along with yours just fine! Does it really matter where they come from?

Before even that, I'd like to know where the eggs came from in the first place.

Who knows? If someone has an answer to that, they haven't let the rest of us in on the secret.

... Good question, actually.

[One that he's asked himself on multiple occasions, but since all the Pokémon he's received that way so far have proved themselves to be great companions, Crow didn't think much of it and just accepted that's how it works.]

This one is the fourth I've ever got that way, but it's the first time I got one I already had. Murkrow, the same kind that I started with. The others... they're all birds, too, which fits my team, I guess.

Nah, can't be it. Pretty sure Black Lance would've had enough decency to lemme know it's his.

Instead of, y'know, getting all offended that I've got a new Murkrow.

And there is the big mystery just hanging over our heads. It was a plain unmarked egg, no clue how you can gander the secrets of its contents before it hatches.

Isn't that how eggs usually work? It's like a present that just unwraps itself one day, and until that day you don't know its contents.

But considering the things whatever gave us these eggs seems to know about some of us, determining the exact contents of an egg would pale in comparison, I think.

Yeah but, usually the eggs have distinctive markings. That's how you id which Pokemon you're expecting from it.

Still sounds like the unsolvable sort of thing. Like, ok. Take for example my addition to my team. I haven't thought much about getting a Zorua, I've been going for fire and dragons. So if you figure it out, share man. Because right now it's like the who dun it we're all confused about.

Admittedly, my egg hasn't hatched yet... but honestly, it's very difficult to tell if the things that happen with this place are purely random with a tendency towards being coincidentally appropriate in some bizarre way, if they're all picked out according to some sort of plan, or if it's a combination of the two. Honestly, the last option seems most likely, but at this point, it's difficult to say for certain.

I doubt even a god could custom-tailor everything to each individual.

At some point when you have enough coincidences, they stop being coincidences. Even if we can't tell why it's happening or what causes it, there comes a point when it's simply impossible that something is still chance.

Honestly, I've been strongly considering that there's some sort of intelligence behind this for quite some time, but I feel as though I need to at least pay lip service to the other possibilities. I doubt that this is the same as what causes us to arrive here and leave, though-from what I've observed, there seems to be less of an element of chance to it.

Well, I think Johto sometimes gives people intentionally what they don't want, or what closely resembles them. A minimal of times, it'll be something that actually appeals for them. This land appears to be particularly empathetic during festive occasions. [ If she knew we were all controlled by muns... she'd totally fourth wall this post into next year. Can you imagine, "We're in a roleplay!!!!!"? ]

Oddly enough, yes. This land in particular seems empathetic towards its residents and is somewhat inconsistent upon treatment. It either charms them, or it just toys with them, sometimes switching from one to the other. These mass distributions of eggs and pokémon have happened before, but what source would go through the effort of distributing them? They're also distributed to only people like us - foreigners to the land, which means most reasonable sources are crossed out because they don't acknowledge us as anything out of the ordinary. [ So, these eggs aren't from mom. ]
