[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

I can't say I've noticed that, but I really only have my own experiences to go by. Still, I'd say that many things would act the same to someone's opinion. Better opinions get nicer treatment. If you'll pardon the expression, that's just human nature.

Yes, I'm aware certain energies receive certain actions, but, this place, without fail, gives it to them when it'd otherwise be slim to none, especially when it comes to pokemon and gifts. It goes above and beyond with the normal karmic energies. It usually can incite this within first sight - the first pokemon you receive.

Oh, I view upon mine quite favorably. I've witnessed many others that haven't, sad as it is. [ Her voice indicates it's not really sad. ]

And how has that gone for them?

Misery can be taken as a challenge and overcome to produce someone happier than before.

Yes, but how many people actually take that opportunity? After all, isn't wallowing in self pity without taking chances for improvement fun? [ The latter part is sarcasm but it should effectively get her point across. No one seems willing to make that leap. ]

[ Well, when it's "make that leap or die"... alright, most people die. But a few of them make it, and those are the only ones Josh deals with anyway. ]

One certainly wonders, given how often it happens. I never saw ordeals as things to be crushed by, but maybe I just have a bit too much pride, hee hee. What's life without a bit of a struggle?

Life without a struggle? A dream, but, unbeknownst to them until they actually achieve that, it's an unsatisfying nightmare. But, who knows, maybe they're too entitled to see that you have to work for what you earn.

[ This CR is starting to turn very very lovely. ] Your resilience is commendable. Most people probably would give up if they were in your shoes, judging by your past implications about how you dealt with your ordeals.

If I'd given up, I likely wouldn't be here now, hee hee. And compared to my situation back home, even the wilderness here isn't so bad with a Pokemon or two. It was a nice vacation, but I was having more fun back home.

I take it your situation is similar?

I haven't been idle like this since birth. [ And even then she was kinda already 250 years old. ] This place is more annoying than anything else, considering how I have work to do the moment I get back home. This intermission couldn't have come at a worse time. [ Hundreds of years worth of planning are now about to come to fruition and this is the result?! ]

Were you caught up in the middle of something important?

Yes, I was. It was a culmination of my entire life, almost. And now I'm here, in the idle Johto landscape with little to do to stave off boredom. [ Her life!!! Isn't it tragic!!! ): ]

There's plenty to do here. The problem is how pointless or useless it all tends to feel. What's the use in this world which isn't our own, hmm?

I'd rather not put effort into something into most things here. The creation, sale and distribution of pokémon being one off the top of my mind. [ which is ironic because she helps ship things for team rocket. ]

Not a very successful one. [ Despite being walking male aphrodisiac. Her name is Lust after all. ]

It seems like the sort of thing that starts difficult and gets easier as time goes on. Of course, that does require the effort of getting there.

Well, it's not so much my pokémon not breeding. It's more that I have nothing to actually breed. Either they're in different groups that would not allow for breeding to happen, or they're the same sex and, obviously, cannot reproduce.

Can't you solve that by catching more?

[ Says the trainer with four things in the same group, only one of which is female. And she's monogamous. ]

I could, but I don't see any reason to. I think Johto is a bit too reliant on eggs.

[ And she's not a charity, nor does she want to aid these types of people. Or people in general, but you know how that is. ]

Possibly. But considering how difficult it seems to be to find some of these creatures in the wild, I can't say I'm entirely surprised. It's just how this world expects you to make most of your money.

I understand if they're rare to find, but, to me, that inspires travel and a little hard work.

What I do not get are the masses buying things like Caterpie eggs.

... Do they? That's... an interesting choice. I suppose some people collect insect specimens...
