[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

I didn't even know these "Pokemon" laid eggs!

[ guess who's new, and also a new breeder? ]

[ shifts the camera to show a shiny Ditto moving about happily. ]

There can't be any special reason why I'd receive one of these things for free, right? I guess it's all right, though, so it can stick around if it wants...

[ the Ditto clings happily to his leg now, chattering, and Shou sighs. ]

I have no idea what to name it, though.

They don't all need names. I don't name mine and they seem happy enough.

Occasionally this place gives everyone an egg, no strings attached. That's just how it is.

[ he seems surprised to hear that, but then grins ]

...Well, I think it's neat to give them names! Preferably cool ones, though as long as it fits them, I guess it wouldn't matter! But it sounds good if yours don't mind not having them, too.

[ looks a little irritated now hearing the last bit, though. ]

"That's just how it is", huh...

[ he looks down at his shiny Ditto, who stares back up happily. ]

I guess if this little guy is mine now, and he wants to travel with me, I can't exactly say "no", right? It's better to just move on forward with everything you've got!

[ when the Ditto chirps in response, Shou'll nod. ]

Yeah, that goes for you, too!

[ looking back at the screen, he'll grin at Joshua, too. ]

It seems like you're also getting along with yours just fine! Does it really matter where they come from?

I suppose that depends on the individual, really. If you're content with never learning the mysteries of this strange world we've all been pulled into, then no, it's doesn't much matter where these Pokemon come from. But I doubt they're unconnected. After all, I've never seen someone on this network who claimed to be from this world originally. They may be out there, but if they are, they're very rare. There's something that makes us different from the natives.

Ehh, but when you say "natives", you're talking about people like --

That "Mom" person and the Professor?

[ his memories of meeting "Mom" and Oak are already fuzzy... ]

They've never posted to the network? That is weird.

-- But they're humans like us, right?

[ okay, maybe now he's pondering the situation a little more than he normally would. Though either way, it's still confusing to him! ]

Maybe we just shouldn't think so much about it? The answers might even come to us when we don't expect it!

"Like us" isn't always a safe assumption. I've talked to multiple people who only became human upon arriving in this world. But if you mean as opposed to Pokemon, then yes.

What fun are mysteries if you don't think about them?

There are people here who weren't human before?! Really? That sounds so --

-- Cool! They must have been heroes in their worlds!

And, well... the answers to some mysteries can surprise you even if you don't think about them? And can get you thinking anyway! So it's like a win-win!

[ really he just doesn't like thinking about things too much. ~~Unless they involve music or the girl he likes.~~ ]

Why would they be heroes? They were probably just normal for their world.

Ehh, well when you put it that way --

But can't villains also have magical powers? Hee hee.

I'm human! Hyuuga-sensei saved me once, so he's like a hero to me, and I look up to him! I want to be like him and protect the people I care about.

You seem so eager to insist on heroes that I had to wonder, that's all.

Oh! Um -- I just kind of have a thing for them then, you could say, haha...

[ HIM AND HYUUGA-SENSEI? He can't even imagine it -- ]

Really? Are you sure you're the hero type?

[ strikes a pose--!! ]

What a shame! Does that mean if you saw someone in trouble, you'd only save that person if they were her?

Okay, I guess you have a point there --

-- Well, if I could help someone else that was in trouble, I'd do that too, then!

There's only so much I can do, really, but...!

[ at least he's being honest? ]

So are you the hero type? Or do you just want to be?

I want to be!

And I will be!

Even if my body is small and weak, I'll do it!

[ he's pretty confident about that, yes. ]

A noble goal. I hope you reach it. The world can always use more heroes, hee hee.
