[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

Well, no. I never assumed that, just that it was a different process.

...If I were fairly new to this place I'd probably consider that somewhat unlikely, but given that Pokemon do seem as though they can be reasonably intelligent and that I've heard of other worlds dominated by things other than humans... well, it's entirely possible that's the case.

My problem with a theory like that is that, as far as we can tell, it's only eggs that arrive here. Though I suppose we have no way of knowing if some Pokemon are also brought here and simply immediately flee from human contact.

Still, it seems unlikely.

You would think that some Pokemon would be a bit more curious about humans, though, and there seem to be several people here who have no difficulty understanding them. I do think it's far more likely that the eggs come from somewhere in this world, but that still doesn't explain where they come from very well.

Exactly. And even though it normally takes two Pokemon to make eggs, one of which matches the species, we've certainly seen eggs that appear to be some of the more rare species. So that separates it into two questions, really. How are the eggs created, and how do they get to us? I suppose some all-powerful being could manage both, but that seems a little too naive to be reasonable.

Well, given that this place occasionally does operate on logic I'd consider naive under normal circumstances, it's entirely possible the same entity is responsible for both... but it's still difficult to say. Researching the legends of regions other than Kanto and Johto have proven fairly tedious, though I've seen some evidence to indicate that some sort of creator deity may exist in the legends of one region or another. Of course, whether it matches up to the legends or not is difficult to say without more information.

To be honest, I'm not even sure if Pokemon breed the same way as animals that you and I would be familiar with, given that there are apparently some breeding pairs that would be outright impossible biologically if that were the case.

No, but presumably they follow somewhat predictable patterns if people are assigned positions dedicated to breeding. I've only dealt with eggs from my Pokemon once myself, but they all took after their mother.

Oh, of course there are specific patterns that it follows, and it obviously requires two Pokemon of opposite sexes-but beyond that, I don't think we know much about it at all, and it's possible that there may be something unusual about it that explains where these 'gift' eggs are coming from.

In that case, wouldn't you expect a breeder to have discovered it already?

There are many things about this place that I would have expected someone to have discovered already. Even the natives seem baffled by it, though I'm not sure how surprising that really is.

The natives can't be trusted for much, hee hee. But I believe every world has its own set of rules it follows, even if we can't understand what they are. The more you investigate, the more you get an idea of what those rules are.

That's certainly true, yes. They're rather off-kilter to begin with and fairly... unreliable. Nevertheless, this place at least has a consistent internal logic, even if it doesn't seem particularly logical by any reasonable standards.

They can be fairly odd when you're speaking to them, and it seems entirely up to chance as to whether you'll have a normal conversation with them or if they'll simply just ramble at you about how much they like shorts.

... Well, I can't say there aren't people who would talk your ear off all day about a single topic back where I come from, but usually they pick more reasonable topics, like games.

...I can't say I think that's much better, but given how many kinds of games there are out there, at least there would be some variety. There is really only so much you can say about shorts.

Oh, no, just one game in particular. Tin Pin Slammer. I don't suppose you've heard of it? It's quite popular with the kids nowadays. Popular enough that some will talk for hours if you let them.

I haven't heard of it in this world. Then again, this world is a video game in my world, so who even knows how these things work?

Yes... I've heard that's the case, and I've always found it to be bizarre. I haven't heard of the game that seems to be based on this world, but then again, I'm not exactly one to keep up with popular culture.

Now what would be interesting is if someone here was from a game or some sort in someone else's world. Or perhaps there's a hierarchy, and we're all from worlds one level above this one, yet below others.

There seem to be some worlds that are relatively similar to each other and ones that are extremely far fetched, really. I actually have met someone here who was fictional in my world-very fictional, in fact. There is literally no way she could have been anything but fictional. Honestly, I thought the whole experience was incredibly stupid, but...
