[ Not that January 1st was actually Joshua's birthday instead of just being a handy date to roll up his age one more year, but Joshua couldn't help the feeling that somehow Johto had hatched his shiny new egg into a... well, shiny new male fox, of all things, this day on purpose.

It probably could only have been more on the mark if the thing had been some combination of grey, blue, and/or purple. ]

Since this isn't exactly the first time it seems everyone spontaneously obtained an egg all at once, I'm going to ask a different question. Do we have any idea what determines which Pokemon we each receive?

[ And if anyone happens to be in Cianwood, Joshua can be found towards the outskirts of the city, sitting sideways on an Absol, Espeon on shoulder and a newly hatched golden Vulpix on his lap, all four of them watching as a Luxray happily bounds about on the sand and knocks out any Pokemon it scares up with its antics. ]

[ Hold up. ]

You received an egg for a Pokemon you already had? Are you sure it didn't come from your own Pokemon?

Nah, can't be it. Pretty sure Black Lance would've had enough decency to lemme know it's his.

[He gives the camera a sheepish grin.]

Instead of, y'know, getting all offended that I've got a new Murkrow.

That's interesting. You haven't run out of birds to catch, have you?

[Blasphemy! There are always birds out there to catch-- wait, that's not what he's asking about, is it.]

You mean like, the species? Now that you mention it... I guess I've got all that I'm familiar with? But for all I know, there might be others I haven't seen yet. Like, last year on Valentine's people got eggs and lots of those turned out to be ones no one's seen before, remember? [He makes a pause, suddenly remembering he hasn't actually spoken to this guy before.] ... Assuming you were here for that?

I was. And actually, I received... well, I'm not sure whether or not you'd call it a bird. It flew on wings, at least.

But maybe this is something's way of telling you that you've found all there are to find.

[... He may or may not regret asking later, but:]

Yeah? What was it?

[Crow taps his cheek thoughtfully as he considers that option.]

You think so? ... But when you put it like that, you make it sound like it's the end of something. [He gives the camera a cheerful smile.] Maybe it's more like a beginning of something new!

A new era in which you collect more than birds. [ Joshua giggles and tosses a Pokeball with his free hand. When he turns the Gear around, a Sigilyph floats over the sand in front of him. ]

[Crow chuckles himself, although he's not convinced if such time would ever come.]

We'll see 'bout that!

[The moment the Sigilyph appears on the screen, Crow's light-hearted attitude bursts like a bubble. He frowns and shifts uncomfortably, as if considering putting the 'Gear away as far from himself as possible, despite the Pokémon that caused his uneasiness being in a different region altogether.]

... Sigilyph.

[Oh joy. Probably one of his least favorite species ever.]

[ And Joshua is back on the feed. ]

You don't sound too enthusiastic.

No kidding.

[Said in the most sarcastic way possible.]

I ain't a big fan of those, 's all.

Why not?

[Crow grimaces, but answers the question after a brief moment of hesitation.]

... It looks like something I'd rather not deal with ever again.

[Only vaguely resembles it, yes, but gods tend to leave enough impression for that to stick.]

[ Joshua takes a moment to study his own flying totem thing. ]

... Here I thought there was almost nothing in the world that looked like these.

Maybe not in your world.

[He sincerely wishes so; it's bad enough he's found out Nazca Lines do exist in some worlds other than his own, but he'd rather it didn't apply to all of them.]

So what does it look like?

... Ever heard of the Nazca Lines?

[ ... ]

[Crow shakes his head with a relieved smile.]

Good for you, then!

So what are they?

... Geoglyphs. In Nazca desert in Peru. Picturing various animals and shit.

Nasty things.

I take it they're more than simple pictures.

... Something like that, yeah.

[Gods, to be precise, but that's not exactly Crow's favorite topic.]

Then what?

[Yeah, no. It's not something he likes talking about, even with his close friends, much less complete strangers. Which is why he surely has a mindblowingly perfect, completely believable response to that question--]

... Really nasty pictures?

[Like that.
