[ The video clicks on to a view of the ceiling in one of the rooms of the Blackthorn Inn. The fan is slowly circling, and the only other thing visible in the frame is an arm reaching straight up from slightly off screen, holding up a Rising Badge. ]

We've already figured out that collecting a whole set of badges doesn't actually get you anything of value, right? Or did that finally change while I wasn't looking?

[ Joshua sighs, and the arm lowers out of the feed. There's the sound of it hitting the bed, and the camera shakes just the slightest. ]

You'd think that after I spent this long collecting them, I'd feel prouder at finally winning the last one. Mmm, perhaps this isn't really for me after all.

[ After a pause, he giggles. Then he rolls over and leans over the Gear, his face finally entering the camera's view. ]

How about this? Tell me about the worst thing that happened to you at home that you're still willing to talk about. Even if it doesn't seem to compare to what others have been through. Tragedy is quite relative, after all.

Do you have a hobby here that doesn't involve Pokemon?

I've learned how to cook and sew, but as I use my Arcanine's fur to stuff pillows and my Blissey's egg to prepare omelets, it might not quite count.

It's close enough. Substituting raw supplies is reasonable, as long as you're not cooking exclusively for Pokemon or sewing only Poke-clothes.

Unfortunately I can't say either of those have ever appealed to me, but I suppose beggars can't be choosers.

They have the advantage of being useful on the road, however. And the necessary supplies are easier to replace than Rosie's bottles of paint.

I can see that. Though if I'm planning on settling down, that's sort of a moot point. Traveling was never really my style, anyway.

[ But he'll keep doing it because even the cities here aren't interesting enough for him whoops. ]

That's a shame. It's so rare to have the opportunity to explore a world with minimal danger.

... Rare? What sort of a world do you come from?

[ Really, all Joshua would have to worry about back home are the usual things: starvation, heat stroke... ]

A world where you cannot take three steps outside a town's walls without meeting monsters.

[He might actually mean that literally.]

How does an economy even function under those conditions?

[ At least around here you just have to avoid the tall grass... ]

With well-armed guards and ships, of course. Besides, the monsters that live close to towns are usually weak and relatively harmless.

[Keyword being relatively.]

Can you farm? Ah, but I suppose if the monsters are edible, you have a plentiful supply of meat...

Of course we can; it merely takes some careful planning. The meat from hunted monsters does help, as long as you remember which species are poisonous.

I don't suppose they have a helpful "Poison" label in your handy electronic encyclopedia, do they? Hee hee...

[ Ah, Pokedexes... ]

Perhaps they would, if we had handy electronic encyclopedias in the first place.

Ah, yes. How fares technology? My world is a good deal more advanced than here, but we didn't exactly have roving monsters to deal with.

We have the monsters, but not the electricity. It's a poor trade.

I'd take the electricity any day, myself. Not to mention cellphones.

I take it you all are master wall builders, though. Hee hee.

I'd not call us masters. We merely use strong stone, rather than whatever the locals use for theirs.

It was an unpleasant month. I'm glad to have this vacation.

I can certainly imagine. Is it always so exciting back in your world, or was the meteor a special occasion?

My world has plenty of excitement, but otherworldly creatures trying to destroy it still count as special occasions, thankfully.

In that case, I have to ask: what passes for "normal" excitement?
