[ That brilliant plan to stay off the network had been working really well for Joshua. At least until one afternoon of training his Vulpix took Joshua away from his Espeon and Luxray just long enough for him to come back to a batch of eggs. So it's time to break the silence and let a certain someone at least know he's out there.

Dammit you two, why can't you keep your affections to yourselves.

I have a few Shinx eggs I'm looking to sell off for... oh, let's say a thousand each. I also still have one from the previous batch I'll give away for 25% off. Both parents have grown since then, so that one probably won't start with as many moves as the full-priced eggs.

Out of curiosity, can Pokemon be spayed or neutered?

You know that's...a very good question. And in all my time here, this is the first time I've ever heard anybody ask it.

I have worked at the various Pokemon Centers around Johto and Kanto for and I can't say that I have ever seen that sort of service offered. And those are the closest things to a vet's office in this world.

My experiences have been similar.

In theory it's possible, since most Pokemon bear close resemblance to pets or other animals from the world I'm familiar with. But if no one has put the research into it, then those techniques might simply not exist here.

Since a lot of people don't exactly think of Pokemon as pets, perhaps it's some kind of taboo? Like how humans don't sterilize humans against their will. [A beat.] At least that's a pretty big no-no in my world.

It seems to me that a reasonable measure of if something is intelligent enough to warrant not being sterilized is if it's able to utilize birth control.

True enough! It might be something to look into if your 'mons really have that much trouble keeping it in their pants.

If chatter surrounding the breeders' convention is to be believed, no one quite knows how pokemon go about making eggs.

Therefore, it seems to follow no one would know how to stop them aside from keeping them separated.

Ah, yes, the Schrodinger's egg problem. Even with that, there has to be some egg-producing organ in females, doesn't there? Otherwise, males and females of different species would be completely indistinguishable, and it wouldn't be necessary to have both a male and a female to produce eggs.

If no one has actually seen an egg being laid...then maybe one isn't laid at all. Maybe they have their own methods of making them appear.

It may even be the male who produces the egg. Wouldn't that be strange?

It would. In that case, why not call them the females?

Maybe what defines a male and a female traditionally doesn't apply to them. How does it go? The mother contributes her species and the father contributes his moves?

They're so different, there's no telling how they work. The people here likely would rather tolerate the extra eggs than risk damaging them by making guesses.

But it could just as easily go the other way. If they don't follow the biological roles that male and female designate, why call them male and female at all?

Guesses are only necessary until the proper techniques are established. That's how science always works.

Economics. These are better than wild Shinx, and even those you'd need to purchase a Pokeball to catch. So there's a value to them.
